Black Caviar becomes first Southern Hemisphere galloper to top world rankings

AUSTRALIAN champion Black Caviar will make history next month when she is the first Southern Hemisphere galloper to top the World Racehorse Rankings.

The superstar mare will also become the first galloper in the world to top any category for four consecutive years.

The sprinter, who was unbeaten in 25 career starts, raced three times during the 2013 calendar year to boast a rating of 130.

She returned from a 34-week break after winning at Royal Ascot to win the race named in her honour, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes for a third consecutive year, and then won the William Reid Stakes before her finale, the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney.

Her rating will make her the world's equal highest with French filly Trev, winner of France's Arc de Triomphe.

In the past two years, Black Caviar has finished runner-up with ratings of 132 and 130 to UK freak Frankel.

Australia's representative on the WRR committee, Greg Carpenter, said that Australia should be thrilled about the impending honours.

"No Southern Hemisphere galloper has topped the ratings, so for Black Caviar to do so for Australia is fantastic. She will share the honour with Trev, because only a miracle could see another galloper join her with only the Arima Kinen in Japan to be raced before the end of the calendar year," he said.

"She also has created history as the only galloper to win any category (sprinter, middle-distance or stayer) for four consecutive years. What an amazing achievement that is to be the best sprinter in the world for that span of time!"

Black Caviar, now retired and in foal to Exceed And Excel, raced 25 times for prizemoney of $7,952,936.

She will be officially recognised in mid-January, adding to her unprecedented three Australian Racehorse of the Year awards, her elevation into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and a host of other accolades.
